Estonia may be far less enticing than other countries but it’s well worth the visit! Old Town is incredible, the people are amazing, and everyone should add it to their bucket list!
How we got there!
This has been one of the craziest deals we’ve ever come across! We booked SLC-HEL for $283 round trip! We would’ve been crazy for not booking it. The deal was for February but it only made for a better experience! There are always good deals out there so don’t miss out!
As part of our time in Helsinki, we booked a ferry to Tallinn, Estonia. We debated between a couple of different countries and were glad we chose Estonia! The ferry was super cheap and was a fun experience and we got to sail across the Baltic Sea. The boat was basically small cruise ship and it was great to relax and take in some views. There are lots of services to get ferry tickets. We went with Direct Ferries and it was a breeze.
What we did!
We spent all our time in Old Town. We didn’t get the modern city Tallinn feel, but Old Town was incredible. There’s plenty to see and do and it’s all walkable.
We were there over Estonia’s Independence Day and we were able to see parades and celebrations. It was really special to experience it with them.
We were there for about 48 hours and we wish we could’ve stayed longer!
Where we stayed!
Right in the perfect location was the perfect Airbnb! it was easy to get to, easy to get from, and right in line with our budget!
Transportation
Instead of Uber, Estonia has Bolt. It’s all the same and it worked great. It was super cheap and got us where we needed. Besides our ride to and from the port, we just walked. Everything is close and walking is always better for the views.
What we ate!
It is a touristy area but still has great food. As usual, we did plenty of grocery store shopping. It’s a great way to experience the culture and save lots of money.
Some of the notable restaurants and cafes include:
Rukis. European cafes are the greatest and this was no exception. They have delicious meals and pastries.
Balti Jaama Turg. It’s a really cool market with lots to buy and eat.
Kehrwieder Saiakang Chocolaterie. A delicious cafe with lots of chocolate and pastries. The vibe is a little strange but there was live music and it was nice and cozy.
Restaurant Rataskaevu 16. Another great restaurant with great vibes and great staff. We loved this place and would highly recommend it!
Save money with groceries but never miss the chance to try new places.
Gluten-Free in Estonia
As in most places outside of the U.S., there is plenty of gluten-free. We had delicious food, all with gluten-free options, and there’s always the grocery store. Be smart and do a little research and you’ll be good to go!
What we learned!
Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s really fascinating! It’s from the 13th century and it’s got incredible stone walls and towers!
They love their flowers. Just outside the walls, there is a huge flower market!
Estonia is super cheap! Bolt rides were less than $10, food was affordable, and our Airbnb was a killer deal!
